Shutting the door on 2023, and looking ahead to 2024, our local high school has been working to make their mark on the community.
Looking back, Principal of South Huron District High School Ed Havenga highlighted the strong sense of community within the school and the broader South Huron community. Despite the challenges of the past year, the school excelled in fostering a sense of unity.
Notable achievements included successful fundraising initiatives, such as the Terry Fox run, The Kindness Project, and a hockey fundraiser for the Morrison McNaughton Trail.
Acknowledging the awareness of global issues among students, Principal Havenga discussed the challenges of helping students navigate the overwhelming nature of current events.
The school focuses on building resilience, emphasizing that it’s okay not to feel okay and providing students with manageable ways to contribute positively to the world. The Eco Exeter club was highlighted as an example of students actively addressing environmental concerns.
Principal Havenga praised the abundance of student leaders within the school, recognizing the importance of nurturing leadership.
Discussing plans for the upcoming year, Principal Havenga expressed a commitment to building on the school’s vibrant community connections.
The school’s goals include fostering community ties with local organizations, advocating for youth through partnerships, and ensuring the community remains a vibrant and attractive place for students, both during their education and as a potential future home to return to.
