Forecasts of 20-30 mm of rain have the local conservation authority alerting residents of the risk of flooding in the area.
The current weather situation is attributed to a low-pressure system that is expected to bring a mix of snow and rain to the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority’s watershed area. The precipitation is anticipated to change to rain later in the day, with total amounts ranging from 20-30 mm across the watershed before ending overnight.
Given the saturated ground conditions, quick runoff is expected, leading to a rapid rise in river levels overnight.
While major flooding is not anticipated, some watercourses are forecasted to exceed bank full.
Residents are urged to exercise caution around creeks and rivers, and to keep children and pets away from waterways. The statement will remain in effect until 12:00 p.m. noon on Friday, January 12.
