Lambton and Middlesex Counties are currently under an Extreme Cold Warning.
A warning was issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada due to the forecast predicting temperatures plunging to as low as -18°C, with wind chill values reaching a chilling -30°C.
Lori Lucas, Supervisor in Health Protection at Lambton Public Health says that the warnings hope to protect the most vulnerable.
Lucas emphasized the importance of general population preparedness, especially in the context of recent power outages in the Grand Bend and Exeter areas. In such cases, municipalities may open reception and emergency centers where the public can find warmth and even a warm meal.
Safety is paramount, and Lucas urged residents to stay informed, take necessary precautions, and reduce travel as much as possible.
As part of the precautionary measures, residents are advised to dress in layers, protect exposed areas from the biting wind, and limit outdoor exposure – it’s also important to prepare for difficult conditions when driving anywhere, and never to leave your home without proper winter attire in case of an emergency.
Conditions will persist thorough the week, and Lucas says that the reality is that many are underprepared for the cold.
If you have a moment, Lucas encourages you to check on elderly neighbours and family members, and make sure that they’re faring well in the bitter conditions. For more information, you can call your local public health unit.
