Community Living Ontario has launched a new campaign, calling on the the Ontario government to turn their eyes to chronic underfunding in community living agencies.
The campaign calls for a 5% increase in the base budget, as well as elevating direct funding for individuals with disabilities by 5% – hence the title of the campaign “5 to Survive”.
Katie Fox, Co-executive director of Community Living South Huron says that the urgency of this campaign is underscored by a sustained period of plateaued funding.
Costs at community living agencies have risen significantly – with increases in nearly every category, from employee wages to rent.
Community Living Ontario has presented a stark picture of the financial challenges, emphasizing the pressing need for sustainability. The plea is not just about financial numbers; it’s a call to action to preserve the well-being of those who depend on these programs.
Fox emphasizes that the time for creativity and innovation is dwindling – with many community living agencies barely surviving.
Locally, the situation remains stable for now, thanks to the efforts of organizations like Ark Angels, which supports Community Living South Huron. However, the concern looms for the future, as sustaining staff salaries and essential programs becomes increasingly challenging.
The 5 to Survive campaign urges citizens to participate in provincial budget considerations by easily sending postcards to their MPP.
For those seeking a more hands-on approach, you can donate goods or time to Ark Angels thrift store in Dashwood – many of Community Living South Huron’s programs would not be possible without their ongoing support.
As the community unites to address this crucial issue, the hope is that the government will heed the call for increased and sustainable funding for developmental services in Ontario. You can sign their petition now at communitylivingontario.ca
