Although it’s once again cold outside, the community is warming up with an upcoming curling event aimed at welcoming newcomers to Canada.
Scheduled for Saturday (February 24th), from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Exeter Curling Club, the event invites newcomers and their supporters to learn the ropes of curling.
Mark Nonkes, the Local Immigration Partnership Manager, shared details about the event.
With last year’s turnout (in Seaforth) reaching 50 participants, Nonkes hopes to surpass that number this year, extending the invitation to individuals from all backgrounds. The event promises not only an introduction to curling but also a social gathering complete with snacks, drinks, and activities for children.
Reflecting on last year’s event, Nonkes recalls the laughter and camaraderie that ensued.
Nonkes emphasizes the importance of such events in helping newcomers integrate into the community, combatting feelings of isolation often experienced in rural areas.
He mentioned the Huron Area Newcomer Support Association, which offers assistance with transportation for those in need – and they’re stepping up to this event, offering rides to anyone from a surrounding town that wants to join in on the fun.
The event requires no advance registration; participants are encouraged to simply show up at the Exeter Curling Club on Riverside Drive. For those needing transportation assistance, arrangements can be made through the Huron Newcomer Support Association by emailing huronwelcome@gmail.com.
