The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance (HPHA) has announced an outbreak of Influenza A at its Medicine Unit in the Stratford General Hospital.
The declaration of outbreak status follows the confirmation of two or more cases of Influenza A among patients, raising concerns about possible transmission within the hospital premises.
As a precautionary measure, the affected unit has been closed to new admissions until further notice.
Collaborating closely with Huron Perth Public Health, HPHA is diligently managing the outbreak, including the notification of patients, family members, caregivers, and team members. Rigorous testing of patients is underway to ascertain the extent of the outbreak and prevent further spread.
In response to the situation, adjustments have been made to family and caregiver presence on the unit. Each patient may now only receive one designated family caregiver or visitor per day, who must adhere to strict infection control protocols. This includes the mandatory use of personal protective equipment such as masks, eye protection, gowns, and gloves.
Erica Jensen, Manager of Quality, Patient Safety, and Infection Control at HPHA, emphasizes the importance of responsible visiting practices. “While we understand the desire to visit loved ones in the hospital, it’s crucial to prioritize the health and safety of patients,” Jensen explains. “Hospitalized individuals are particularly vulnerable, and exposure to illnesses like influenza, COVID-19, or even a common cold can pose serious risks. If you or anyone in your household is feeling unwell, we urge you to refrain from visiting until fully recovered.”
