The Huron Women’s Shelter is the Usborne and Hibbert & myFM Community Partner for the month of April.
For many in our community, the Huron Women’s Shelter stands as a vital lifeline during moments of turmoil and distress. But what exactly is the Huron Women’s Shelter, and what does it offer to those in need?
Executive Director Corey Allison says that its core, the Huron Women’s Shelter is a sanctuary for women and families.
The shelter not only provides a safe haven for families in crisis, but also offers free services such as risk assessment, safety planning, counseling, and assistance in navigating complex legal systems. Whether someone seeks refuge in the shelter or reaches out for support remotely, they are met with compassionate advocates who guide them through their journey to safety and healing.
The shelter’s mission transcends merely providing immediate assistance. It also operates three second-stage programs located in Exeter, Clinton, and Goderich. These programs offer a year-long residential component aimed at helping survivors and their families move forward and recover from the trauma of gender-based violence.
Allison says that their services are not only for those in the most immediate need of relocation.
Moreover, the shelter extends its reach into the community through its children’s program, providing support and education to children and youth affected by violence. From school-based initiatives to individual counseling sessions, the shelter works tirelessly to ensure that every member of the community receives the care and support they deserve.
Yet, despite its critical role in our community, the Huron Women’s Shelter heavily relies on the support of the community itself.
In Allison’s own words, the ultimate goal is to render their services unnecessary by addressing the root causes of gender-based violence and fostering a culture of respect and equality. Until then, the Huron Women’s Shelter remains steadfast in its commitment to providing safety, support, and hope to those in need, one step at a time.
