92 miners, salary staff, and maintenance staff are reportedly being laid off at Goderich’s salt mine.
Unifor’s national representative, Gary Lynch, said that the layoff included 70 production workers, 17 maintenance workers, and five salary staff.
Lynch, who spent 23 and a half years employed at the Goderich Salt Mine before assuming his role with Unifor, says that you can point the finger at mother nature.
This layoff, representing approximately a quarter of the workforce, will have a significant impact on the community. However, Lynch was optimistic that the workers would be back by the fall.
Although the hope is that the workers will be back before too long, the impact will likely still be profound for many in the community.
Compass Minerals also called the layoffs “temporary,” – this is the first time that full time staff have been laid off by the company in four years.
