A request from a local condominium board on Jowett’s Grove Road for water service saw a resounding no from Bluewater council at their meeting last week (Tuesday, May 21).
That’s due to a historic struggle on behalf of Bluewater to work with Central Huron to provide water services to the area, which technically falls just north of Bluewater’s boundary.
Approving the request would have decreased Bayfield’s uncommitted water capacity from 161 to 136 residential units, raising significant concerns among council members about the municipality’s ability to support future development.
Councillor Bill Whetstone expressed unease about the proposal. He referenced a past report by BM Ross that projected significant future growth for Bayfield, underscoring the need to reserve water capacity for potential developments.
Deputy Mayor John Becker echoed Whetstone’s sentiments, recalling the struggle with Central Huron during the construction of Bayfield’s water tower.
Councillor Scott Harris said that he didn’t want to repeat history – with sewage capacity currently hampering Bayfield’s ability to support additional residential units, a sentiment which was echoed by Mayor Paul Klopp.
Council unanimously rejected the request, agreeing that Bluewater must prioritize its own needs over external requests.
