Upcoming discussions at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference will see South Huron advocating for a variety of local concerns.
The municipality has requested a meeting with Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Steve Clark. Key topics include the annual repayment limit (ARL) and the municipality’s borrowing strategy. Another focal point will be the successes in housing development, where the council intends to reaffirm their commitment to advocating for denser housing solutions.
Discussions may also centre around the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC). The last review of MPAC was in 2016, and delays are causing significant financial strain on local municipalities due to lost tax dollars – especially as property tax is the primary revenue source for municipalities.
The council will also be looking to get information about potential funding opportunities for the newly approved firehall in Dashwood. Discussions may involve the Minister of Infrastructure and exploring asset management programs. Additionally, with the 2026 provincial election on the horizon, council aims to plant the seed for future investment needs.
There is also the possibility that the municipality will discuss fire response standardization for electric vehicles.
Recognizing the importance of regional collaboration, South Huron is reaching out to neighboring municipalities to explore a joint approach, similar to previous health ministry consultations involving Lambton Shores and North Middlesex.
