The Ontario government is giving nearly $52,000 to Scouts Canada to help restore the Oak Savanna at Camp Attawandaron in Lambton Shores. The Oak Savanna is a rare ecosystem that lies between prairie grassland and oak woodland.
Scots pines, planted in the area many years ago, are now invasive and taking over the oak habitat. This project will restore the natural biodiversity by planting native trees and shrubs and removing some of the Scots pines.
The funding comes from the Ontario Community Environment Fund, which uses fines paid by polluters to support local environmental projects. This year, Ontario will invest nearly $1.5 million in projects like shoreline cleanups, habitat restoration, and tree planting. The Scouts Canada project is one of 11 projects receiving funds in 2024.
