A 13-year-old boy charged with the murder of a 12-year-old girl in Huron County will return to court next week for an update on the case.
The boy, who was arrested earlier this week in Central Huron and charged with first-degree murder, made a brief video court appearance in Goderich on Friday morning.
During the hearing, the boy, who appeared virtually from a youth detention facility, stated his name and birth date while twisting in his chair. He was remanded in custody.
The 13-year-old was charged after Huron County OPP responded around 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday to a Cut Line Road address near Holmesville, a small community west of Clinton.
Police and emergency personnel found a person who was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.
The 13-year old’s defense lawyer, Robert Morris, postponed the case to a youth court session on July 11 to allow time for discussions with the Crown attorney and to receive more information.
The next court appearance is expected to be as brief as Friday’s, with no indication of a possible bail hearing date.
The names and identities of both the boy and the girl are protected by a court order and the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The police investigation centered on an area near the former Holmesville elementary school, which has been closed for several years. The school was cordoned off with police tape while investigators worked on the scene.
On Friday afternoon, the OPP requested public assistance, asking anyone who was near the school between 12 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday to come forward. Motorists who passed through the area are also asked to check their dashcams for any helpful footage.
