When people think about donating blood, they often picture car crash victims or accident patients. But there are many other reasons why blood donations are needed. It is important for our community to support Canadian Blood Services and their goal of encouraging more people to donate.
Maureen Macfarlane, Community Development Manager at Canadian Blood Services, is hopeful that all available appointment slots will be filled as a blood donation event makes its way to Clinton on August 19th from 1-7pm.
Blood and its products are vital for many medical needs, including surgeries, medical procedures, cancer treatments, and managing various health conditions. As a donor, you help many Canadians stay healthy and save lives.
Blood is made up of different parts, each with a specific function. When you donate, you give whole blood, which can be divided into four components. These components can be used separately or together to treat different conditions.
To ensure a smooth donation process, be sure to stay hydrated, eat before donating, get enough sleep, and be in good health.
Men can donate whole blood every 56 days, while women can donate every 84 days. Plasma donations can be made every 6-14 days, depending on the program, and platelets can be donated every 14 days.
According to Macfarlane, the need for blood donations is higher than ever, as more people require them. Unfortunately, fewer eligible donors are stepping forward.
Macfarlane understands that donating blood might feel intimidating, but she reassures potential donors that the process is safe and important.
