The Huron County Museum and Huron County Library are partnering to host the Huron County Author Talk and a book fair on Saturday, November 16th, with writers’ workshops following on Sunday, November 17th. Saturday’s event is free to attend, while Sunday’s workshops require a $25 registration fee per session.
On Saturday, November 16th, the event will feature panel discussions and a book fair where attendees can meet local authors and hear them discuss their work. This free event includes themed panels covering different types of writing. Donations are appreciated. At 12:15 p.m., the Publishing the Past panel will discuss historical fiction, non-fiction, and drama, featuring authors David Yates, Sue Jaskula, and Paul Ciufo. At 1:45 p.m., Genre Reels will focus on writing for young adult, LGBTQ2S+, children’s, and speculative fiction markets, with authors Avery Baker-Greaves, Arlene McFarlane, E.K. Johnston, and Alexandra Mae Jones sharing their experiences. At 3:15 p.m., Close to Home will explore writing stories set in Huron County, featuring authors Don Hayward, Sandi Plewis, and Sally Walker.
Between panels, there will be opportunities to chat with authors, enjoy coffee and treats, and shop at the book fair hosted by Bayfield Village Bookshop. A variety of books will be on sale, including young adult, science fiction, mystery, romance, historical fiction, and local history. This is a great opportunity to start holiday shopping for any book lover in your life, with the option to have books signed by the authors.
On Sunday, November 17th, writers’ workshops will offer practical advice on editing and marketing for local writers looking to improve their craft. Each session costs $25, and refreshments and snacks are included. From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., Cindy Matthews will lead Revise Without Regret, a workshop focusing on revision techniques for writers. Participants should bring a sample of their work to apply new strategies during the workshop. Cindy Matthews, an award-winning author of short stories, will guide attendees through approaches to editing without losing the essence of their work. From 3:00 to 4:30 p.m., Wendy Million will lead Finding Your Readers, a workshop on marketing books in 2024, which will cover topics such as social media, ad strategies, and writing with an ideal reader in mind.
To register, attendees can reserve their tickets on Eventbrite, as space is limited for each workshop session.
