Living Wage Week in Ontario takes place from November 18th to 22nd, and United Way Perth-Huron (UWPH) has announced the updated living wage for the region at $23.05 per hour, a slight increase from last year’s $22.75.
The living wage reflects how much someone needs to earn per hour to cover basic expenses like food, housing, and childcare in their area. It is calculated by the Ontario Living Wage Network (OLWN) based on costs for different household types, including two adults with two small children, a single parent, and a single adult. The calculations also factor in government taxes, benefits, and transfers.
In Perth-Huron, 37 certified employers across various industries pay at least the local living wage. To become certified, businesses must commit to paying all employees the current living wage and adjust wages as the rate changes each year.
