Holiday season is in full swing! Homes are filling with decorations, glowing lights, and festive cheer. While the season brings joy, South Huron Fire Chief Jeremy Becker reminds everyone to be mindful of fire risks that often come with holiday traditions.
Lights should also be carefully inspected before use to ensure there are no damaged cords or frayed wires. He cautions against overloading extension cords, as they should only be a temporary solution and used with care.
Holiday lights, while beautiful, should not be left on for extended periods. Becker explains that prolonged use can dry out real trees, increasing the risk of fire.
He recommends turning off lights when leaving the house or going to bed. Outdoor decorations require extra care as well. Only use lights and equipment rated for outdoor use.
If a fire does occur, Becker stresses the importance of acting quickly.
Open-flame candles are another hazard to watch out for during the holidays. Becker suggests using battery-powered candles as a safer alternative. He also highlights the need for caution with lithium-ion batteries, which are common in modern gifts. Overcharging or using incorrect chargers can lead to overheating. For older decorations or battery-operated items, Becker warns against using corroded batteries, recommending they be replaced with fresh ones after cleaning the terminals.
Becker also emphasized the importance of functional smoke alarms. He advises testing them regularly and contacting the local fire department if there are any concerns.
