OFSC urges snowmobilers to check trail guide before riding this winter
The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) is reminding snowmobilers to prioritize safety by consulting the Interactive Trail Guide (ITG) before heading out.
The caution comes as the OFSC launches Provincial Snowmobile Safety Week, running January 13 to 21.
Due to an unusually late start to winter, most of the province’s 30,000 kilometres of prescribed trails remain unavailable for recreational use. Proper trail preparation requires extended sub-zero temperatures to set a frost layer, freeze waterways, and build a durable snow base. These weather-dependent conditions are only beginning to take shape.
Trail status on the ITG is categorized as green (available with caution), yellow (limited and marginal), or red (closed and prohibited). “As we await the cooperation of Mother Nature, I urge snowmobilers to make safety their number one priority,” said OFSC CEO Ryan Eickmeier.
Snowmobilers are also warned against using early-season ice or venturing onto closed trails, which may lead to dangerous conditions or trespassing violations. Even when trails are marked green, riders are encouraged to exercise care, reduce speed, and stay informed.
