While this winter’s snowmobiling conditions are near perfect, not all riders are following the rules on local trails.
During Ontario Snowmobile Safety Week (February 10–17, 2025), Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) West Region officers patrolled trails and issued 49 charges. These included two impaired riding charges, two muffler violations, and 38 documentation offenses related to permits, licenses, registration, and insurance.
The campaign focused on preventing unsafe riding behaviors that cause serious accidents, injuries, and property damage. Excessive speed, riding too fast for conditions, and alcohol impairment remain the top causes of fatal snowmobile crashes in Ontario.
Snowmobilers are reminded to use the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) Interactive Trail Guide (ITG) for real-time trail status updates. It is illegal to ride on trails marked as unavailable (highlighted in red on the ITG).
“This winter’s ideal conditions mean riders can enjoy a long season, but safety must come first. We encourage all snowmobilers to follow the rules and ride responsibly,” said Acting Inspector Chuck Lorway, OPP West Region Traffic and Marine Manager.
